TLT wrap

Turkey lettuce and tomato wrap? No, it's Global Volunteers' annual Team Leader Training!

After 3 weeks of visitors from 18 countries, I am glad to report I survived my first TLT. They were long days held at a remote site far, far away from the land of Lake David. But, it was heart warming to be a host to these international visitors, and to learn from their many years of experiences leading volunteer teams in their own communities.

It was obvious to me that this course had evolved over many years to become something that was impressive both for its educational value as well as for the effort of staff involved in the undertaking.

Now seems to be a calm 'after' the storm. As many people begin taking holiday vacation, and the international staff have dispersed to their home countries, we are left with relative quiet in the office...but a LONG list of things we'd like to accomplish next.

  1. New business development and partnerships
  2. Finish development on the new website and begin to roll out CMS components
  3. Finish collateral materials for 2 new campaigns (Country Newsletters, Replace Yourself)
  4. Update search engine advertising that has been idle.

I will never be bored if I always have a wish list of priorities to be tackled next. My manager could probably write a list of 50 things she'd like us to do but in reality, most initiatives take months. Those large undertakings involve other departments and should follow some sort of project plan or process outline. To focus in the present, I need to know what comes first-- lest I find myself jumping from one to another of the 50 wish-list projects. I do love multitasking, but more than 5 things would just be unrealistic. After all, we can only do so many things in a day.

What works best for you?

Oh, there's probably some metric out there about the number of balls one can juggle at once before losing productivity across them all. Kathy and I have become big-time multi-taskers as we sit and watch TV while ALWAYS doing something else at the same time: using our laptops, reading, knitting, sewing, doing a crossword or suduko, etc. Things get really interesting when you watch kids multi-task at their level. In this day and age, kids have so many things going on that parents get criticized for it but I absolutely know that my kids have such a need for brain stimulation that I think they'd fail if they simply had school as their only outlet. Gillie has piano and Taekwondo, Carly has Taekwondo and Brownie scouts and while it's not as much as other kids, especially ones on a sports team, it forces them to organize their time in a structured-enough way that they have to plan how to get both their fun in and their chores and homework done.

A happy new year to you and Christine!
